A collar sits tight at the base of the throat; a rope can fall past the waist — and both are "correct," depending on the look you want. Understanding where each standard length lands makes it much easier to choose a piece (or a gift) you'll actually love wearing.
How to Choose Your Length
A few different ways to land on the right length, depending on what you have to work with.
Use a Necklace You Already Own
Find a piece you already love the length of, and use its measurement as your starting point.
- Lay the necklace flat and measure end to end (clasp closed).
- Note where it currently sits on you when worn.
- Match that length to the chart below to find similar styles.
The easiest way to shop your existing favorite proportion.
Measure With a String
No necklace on hand? Preview where a length will fall before you buy.
- Drape a string around your neck at the drop you'd like.
- Mark where the ends would meet, then measure the total loop.
- Match that measurement to the chart below.
A mirror helps — look at the drop straight-on, not down at your chest.
Consider Your Neckline
The right length often depends on what you'll wear it with, not just your body.
- Crewnecks and turtlenecks pair best with 18"+ lengths that sit below the collar.
- V-necks and scoop necks flatter shorter, 14–16" lengths that echo the neckline.
- Off-the-shoulder and strapless styles work well with almost any length.
When gifting, 18" is the safest, most universally flattering length.
A Few Things That Affect Fit
- Petite frames often find standard lengths sit a little lower than expected — consider sizing down slightly.
- Pendants usually look best with a little extra length so the charm can hang freely — add about 2" to your usual preference.
